How To Datalog Via HP Tuners

Overview

HP Tuners RTD (Real-Time Device, such as RTD+, RTD3, or RTD4) is used for data logging vehicle performance data, often for tuning purposes. There are two primary methods to datalog with an RTD:

  1. Using the TDN (Tune Delivery Network) App on your smartphone (via Bluetooth connection to the RTD). This is convenient for mobile logging but logs are basic and typically sent to a tuner; you can’t view detailed logs directly in the app.
  2. Using VCM Scanner software on a laptop (with RTD connected via USB). This provides more control, customizable channels, and allows you to view and save logs directly.

Ensure your RTD is set up and synced with HP Tuners (e.g., via the TDN app or VCM Suite). You’ll need the device plugged into your vehicle’s OBD-II port. Always follow your tuner’s specific instructions if provided, as configurations can vary by vehicle.

Method 1: Datalogging with the TDN App (Mobile)

The TDN app (available for iOS and Android) allows standalone data logging without a laptop. Logs are stored on the RTD and can be synced/uploaded, but for viewing, you’ll need VCM Scanner on a computer.

Prerequisites

  • Download the TDN app from the App Store or Google Play.
  • Pair your RTD with the app via Bluetooth (follow HP Tuners’ setup guide: connect RTD to OBD-II, open app, enter invite code from your tuner if applicable, and connect).
  • Ensure the vehicle is running and the RTD is powered (green light on).
  • Internet connection for syncing logs afterward.

Steps

  1. Start your vehicle and let it idle for 3-4 minutes to stabilize.
  2. Open the TDN app and ensure it’s connected to your RTD (tap the device icon if needed).
  3. Tap the DATA LOG button on the navigation bar. This opens the Data Logging Control screen.
  4. Configure any basic settings if prompted (e.g., select vehicle profile; defaults are often sufficient for basic logs).
  5. Tap Start or the record button to begin logging.
  6. Perform the required driving procedure (e.g., wide-open throttle pulls, cruising, or as instructed by your tuner). Avoid distractions while driving.
  7. Tap Stop when finished.
  8. To view or sync files: Tap VIEW & SYNC FILES. Select the log from the list of vehicles/logs.
  9. Upload/sync the log to your tuner via the app (tap Send or follow prompts). Logs are in .HPL format but can’t be viewed in detail within the app.

Notes: Logs are stored on the RTD. To retrieve and view them fully, connect the RTD to a laptop via USB and use VCM Scanner (see Method 2). If you have the Pro Feature Set, advanced standalone logging options may be available.

Method 2: Datalogging with VCM Scanner (Laptop)

This method uses HP Tuners’ VCM Suite software for more detailed logging. It’s ideal if you need custom channels or immediate log review.

Prerequisites

  • Download and install VCM Suite (Beta version recommended) from the HP Tuners website (e.g., http://files.hptuners.com/VCM%20Suite/VCM%20Suite%20(Beta).msi).
  • If your tuner provided a .XML config file, save it to your desktop. Otherwise, use vehicle defaults or download a generic one if needed.
  • Laptop with USB port and internet for initial sync.
  • RTD device.

Setup

  1. Open VCM Scanner (search for it in Windows or navigate to C:\Program Files (x86)\HP Tuners\VCM Suite (Beta)\VCM Scanner.exe). Create a desktop shortcut if desired.
  2. Connect the RTD to your vehicle’s OBD-II port.
  3. Connect the RTD to your laptop via USB cable.
  4. In VCM Scanner, go to Help > Resync Interface to sync the RTD.
  5. Go to Channels > Open Channel Config.
  6. Load the .XML config file (if provided by tuner) or select Load Vehicle Defaults.
  7. Click the Connect to Vehicle icon (blue car icon) to link VCM Scanner to your vehicle profile.
  8. If parameters are grayed out, modify the Vehicle Profile (enter strategy info from your tuner if provided), then reconnect.
  9. Disconnect from the vehicle temporarily if needed.

Datalogging

  1. With the vehicle running and connected, click Start Scanning (red circle icon).
  2. Perform the datalog procedure as required (e.g., drive under specific conditions).
  3. Click Stop Scanning (blue square icon) when complete.

Viewing and Saving Logs

  1. Go to Log File > Save Log File As and save the .HPL file to your computer.
  2. Open the saved file in VCM Scanner for review (use graphs, tables, etc., under the View menu).
  3. Send the file to your tuner via email or upload portal.
  4. Disconnect from the vehicle and unplug devices.

Troubleshooting Tips:

  • If the RTD doesn’t connect: Ensure firmware is updated via VCM Suite.
  • No data showing: Check OBD-II connection, vehicle key position (ON or running), and resync.
  • For standalone logging without a laptop (advanced): Use MPVI3/RTD Pro features, but this requires additional setup.
  • Always refer to HP Tuners’ official forums or support for vehicle-specific issues.
