Upcoming EV truck company, Lordstown, publish a short video clip today of their “alpha” (early prototype) Endurance truck doing some testing at a proving grounds. The test vehicle appears to be a camouflaged crew cab Chevy Silverado 1500 from a couple of years ago. What does this mean? Will the Endurance truck use GM’s previous-generation full-size truck chassis and body? Is this also a look at what could be a Silverado or GMC Sierra electric prototype? Let’s look at the details.

Lordstown Endurance

The Endurance design includes a traditional body-on-frame design with a fairly standard suspension system. The innovation comes in the form of four in-hub electric motors. Each motor is powering each wheel. Energy comes from an onboard battery (it’s a BEV). This is not a plug-in hybrid or a hydrogen fuel-cell vehicle.

Peak power is rated at 600 hp, and maximum driving range is estimated at 250+ miles. Each 20-inch wheel hides an electric motor that also incorporates a braking system (not just regenerative braking via the electric motors).

Lordstown is an up and coming electric truck manufacturer (based in Lordstown, OH) that is working on a new pickup truck with a very unique four wheel drive system. The Endurance truck is meant to be a no frills crew cab truck that can be used for work and/or play.

The early prototype we see in this teaser video can be simply that – a prototype. The final version of the Endurance truck will most likely have unique sheet metal. Will it use GM’s truck frames, axles, suspension, and more? More details will be released at a later date.

What do you think about the Lordstown approach to building an electric truck? They appear to be using an existing chassis. They remove the internal combustion engine, transmission, half-shafts, differentials, and manage a true 4-wheel-drive system with four individually controlled motors.
